WW2 RAF Pilot Seat Identified Miles Master
Description
Here is a historical piece from the RAF (Royal Air Force, English air force):
a Pilot seat from a Miles Master, whose history is known, and which is as follows:
The crash.
DL 570 took off with W8773 from RAF High Ercall for a cross-country training exercise over Wales and returned to Tern Hill. Pilot Officer Chinery, flying W8773, accompanied by his student, Sergeant Hyndman, was navigating both aircraft. When both aircraft encountered thick clouds and were unable to avoid them, they simply flew into the clouds, which they knew would hide the hills below. As this was the case, they thought they were on a different part of the route, with low-lying terrain, close to the coast. Ahead were cloud-covered hills. To determine their position, both aircraft descended. W8773 struck the hilltop first at 1,700 feet ASL, bursting into flames, rolling down the hillside, and killing both crew members. DL570 narrowly missed the summit, which drops about 30 to 50 feet at this point, and, still in a shallow attitude, struck the boggy ground and overturned. Both crew members were unharmed. They were able to follow the valley to Abergwesyn and raise the alarm. Recovery crews eventually arrived and were mobilized to begin the recovery operation.
