Le crash.
Le DL 570 a décollé avec le W8773 de la RAF High Ercall pour un exercice de formation de cross-country au-dessus du Pays de Galles et est retourné à Tern Hill. Le sous-lieutenant d'aviation Chinery, aux commandes du W8773, accompagné de son élève, le sergent Hyndman, effectuait la navigation des deux avions. Lorsque les deux avions ont rencontré des nuages épais et n'ont pas pu les éviter, ils ont simplement volé dans les nuages dont ils savaient qu'ils cacheraient les collines en contrebas. Comme c'était le cas, ils pensaient se trouver sur une autre partie de la route, avec des terrains bas, près de la côte. Devant nous se trouvaient des collines couvertes de nuages. Pour déterminer leur position, les deux avions sont descendus. Le W8773 a d'abord heurté le sommet de la colline à 1 700 pieds ASL, s'enflammant, dévalant le flanc de la colline et tuant les deux membres d'équipage. Le DL570 a raté de peu le sommet qui descend d'environ 30 à 50 pieds à ce stade et, toujours dans une assiette peu profonde, a heurté le sol marécageux et s'est retourné, les deux membres d'équipage sont indemnes. Ils ont pu suivre la vallée jusqu'à Abergwesyn et sonner l'alarme. Les équipes de dépannage sont finalement arrivées et ont été mobilisées pour démarrer l'opération de dépannage.

The crash.
DL 570 took off with W8773 from RAF High Ercall for a cross-country training exercise over Wales and returned to Tern Hill. Pilot Officer Chinery, at the controls of W8773, accompanied by his student, Sergeant Hyndman, carried out the navigation of the two planes. When both planes encountered thick clouds and could not avoid them, they simply flew into the clouds that they knew would hide the hills below. As it was, they thought they were on another part of the route, with low ground, near the coast. Ahead of us were hills covered in clouds. To determine their position, both planes descended. W8773 first struck the top of the hill at 1,700 feet ASL, bursting into flames, rolling down the hillside and killing both crew members. The DL570 narrowly missed the summit which drops about 30 to 50 feet at this point and, still in a shallow attitude, struck the marshy ground and overturned, both crew members unhurt. They were able to follow the valley to Abergwesyn and raise the alarm. The recovery teams finally arrived and were mobilized to start the recovery operation.
